Whilst these are of course helpful, there is a unique charm and sense of adventure when it comes to exploring lesser-known gems and embracing spontaneity when you travel.

Instead of planning every single minute of your trip, down to every restaurant and each experience, leave some room for going with the flow! Allow yourself to stumble upon hidden gems and unexpected experiences by giving yourself flexibility in your travel plans.

Perhaps not literally! But engaging with locals is one of the best ways to discover hidden spots and authentic experiences. Ask for recommendations on where to eat, or which attractions to visit, or even if there are any local events happening during your stay, in our experience wherever you go there will always be someone willing to wax lyrical about their home country to a new or returning visitor.

OPT FOR ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION

Consider staying in guesthouses, homestays, or smaller boutique hotels instead of big chain establishments. Not only is this more responsible travel, but these often provide a more intimate experience and a chance to connect with the locals who are behind them and helps with our previous tip!

EXPLORE LESSER-KNOWN DESTINATIONS

We probably all have a travel wishlist we want to tick off, but if you research and explore places that are not as famous as major tourist hotspots, you will often enjoy more genuine and less crowded experiences, so think outside the box!

This is one of our favourites at Marvellous Escapes. Local transportation options like trains & buses or shared taxis, is a great way of potentially coming across more unexpected sights and interactions during your journey, and perhaps seeing things you wouldn’t ordinarily see.
