Whilst the Middle East has had its fair share of trouble, beginning many moons ago, Jordan has predominantly stayed a safe place for travellers wanting to visit this region of the world. Home to a fascinating history, iconic sites, delicious food, and many picturesque desert landscapes, there is a lot to offer the discerning traveller here, with one particular site a must for any travel bucket-list. Here are some of the top highlights of Jordan…
VISIT THE ANCIENT CITY OF PETRA
Think of Jordan and you most likely think of the ancient city of Petra, and rightly so. There are few ancient relics around the world that are more striking than the ‘rose city’. The treasury has become an ‘Instagrammers’ dream, and is the first image that greets you on arrival here. Its huge stone columns looming ahead, the sunlight making them glow a rich orange. Be sure to take the hike to the monastery so as not to miss out on all the treasures of this historic site, or perhaps you’d prefer to see it all by night? A unique experience by candlelight.
FLOAT IN THE DEAD SEA
The Dead Sea is famous for being the lowest point on earth with almost 10 times the salt content compared with regular seawater. For that reason, it’s a great place to float away in both body and mind. Thought to heal all manner of skin complaints, it even boasts a mud spa for a total wellness experience.
EXPERIENCE BEDOUIN CULTURE
Bedouin’s were once a purely nomadic people inhabiting the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula, nowadays they live a more modern lifestyle, but you will still find small enclaves of them living a simpler life. Bedouin is one of the main cultures in Jordan and it is highly recommended to immerse yourself in this ancient way of life on your holiday to Jordan. You can choose to join a tour which might involve cooking with Bedouins, or hike with a Bedouin guide who will enlighten you on their traditional lifestyle. You can even choose to stay overnight in a Bedouin camp for the full experience!
VISIT WADI RUM
Wadi Rum, or as the Bedouin’s know it ‘the Valley of the Moon’ has become a popular filming location over the years, Lawrence of Arabia was filmed here, as was Star Wars and Promethus to name a few. Wadi Rum is perfect for stargazing, due to its remote location, so well worth a visit after dark, but there are plenty of other activities here during the day to keep you occupied, including 4x4 jeep tours and camel rides to help you explore this vast valley and some of the 25,000 rock carvings and 2,000 inscriptions that can be seen here.
EXPLORE THE JERASH RUINS
Aside from Petra and Wadi Rum, Jerash is one of the most popular sites to visit in Jordan. The area is home to ruins dating back to when Romans ruled the lands here. It is one of the most well preserved Roman cities on earth and is not one to be missed on your trip to Jordan. During the summer, a festival is held here, where you can immerse yourself in the music, dance and theatre culture from long ago.
