DISCOVER MAURITIUS

Mauritius is an Indian Ocean island full of diversity. From nature experiences to historical culture, amazing beaches, and phenomenal foodie experiences. A holiday in Mauritius suits every type of traveller, whether you’re a family of five, a group of friends or choosing this destination for your honeymoon. But where to begin when planning your trip? Here are our top five things to see and do in this varied island.

ADMIRE THE CAPITAL’S COLONIAL CHARM

Mauritius may be bursting with luxury coastal resorts and picturesque villages, but its often overlooked capital is well worth exploring, as it is a world away from other experiences you will encounter on the island.

Port Louis sits on the north western side of the island and is a kaleidoscope of cultures. A walk around this city will highlight the capitals colonial charm. From imposing buildings, to the country’s largest mosque. It is a stark contrast to the more modern waterfront of the city, which houses the city’s cruise terminal, plus modern retail units and eateries.

GET BACK TO NATURE IN THE BLACK RIVER GORGES

In the heart of the lush interior of Mauritius lies the Black River Gorges. Home to over 300 species of native plant and an incredible array of bird species. This National Park is perfect for enjoying a hike where you may encounter monkeys, deer and even fruit bats and wild boar. There are a range of viewpoints to soak up impressive views of the island as well as a waterfalls and areas to picnic should you need to stop for a snack.

SAMPLE THE GOOD STUFF AT A TEA PLANTATION

If you are a fan of tea, then Mauritius is the place for you! There are plenty of options across the island to learn more about the history and production of tea in the country, and of course the opportunity to taste some! Bois Cheri Tea Gardens is the biggest and the oldest of them all. Visit its museum to understand more about the importance of this plant to the island, and it is here you can enjoy a taste of multiple varieties of tea, from standard black tea to herbal varieties, all whilst soaking up impeccable views.

SOAK UP THE SUN ON A DREAMY MAURITIAN BEACH

Mauritius is well known for idyllic beaches, and its no doubt that whatever type of traveller you are, or the type of holiday you are on, you will no doubt want to experience some of them for yourself.

No matter where you base yourself in Mauritius, there won’t be a beach far away! The beaches in the south of the island tend to be a little quieter, but the east boasts some of the best on the island. Whether you want to relax, or indulge in a little water sports, there is a beach for everyone in Mauritius.

PHOTOGRAPH LE MORNE BRABANT

Le Morne Brabant is hard to miss on the island of Mauritius. It’s the huge peak rising out of the shores of the southwest of the island, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so well worth visiting, or admiring from afar. Many people visit Mauritius to climb this imposing peak, which is tough and not for the faint of heart, and requires a local climbing guide, who can also help spot native flora and fauna en-route. If climbing isn’t your thing, we recommend a boat trip out on the southwestern shores of the islands to take you’re very best picture, or just soak in the views of this impressive and rugged mountain.
