FLÅMSBANA RAILWAY
The Flåm Railway, or Flåmsbana, runs a spectacular 20.2 km stretch between Myrdal up in the mountains and the tranquil village of Flåm beside the Aurlandsfjord. It connects the Bergen Line with Norway’s fjords, and is one of the most breathtaking compact rail journeys in the world.
Around 60 minutes each way, aboard the Flåm Railway you’ll descend through dramatic ravines, cascading waterfalls, and pass small farmsteads clinging to steep slopes. The line includes around 20 tunnels (many hand-carved), hairpin turns, and engineering marvels designed to traverse over 800m of elevation change.
The train pauses for a few moments at Kjosfossen waterfall, giving you the chance to experience the roar and mist of this spectacular phenomenon, plus sometimes a glimpse of the mythical huldra (a folkloric forest spirit said to appear singing) as performers sometimes appear in traditional costume.
The Flåm Railway is a must for any Norway rail holiday and is best experienced in conjunction with the Bergen Line (onwards toward Oslo or Bergen) or as part of a Norway in a Nutshell® or Sognefjord in a Nutshell™ rail holiday, pairing fjords and high mountains into a seamless itinerary.

Both Flåm and Myrdal stations host cafés (including Café Rallaren at Flåm) where you can enjoy a coffee or snack before or after the journey.
