Antarctica has a relatively short season to visit, running from November to March. Those visiting early in the season can expect landscapes covered in fresh, crisp snow and the birds and penguins courting and mating. In December, you can experience around 20 hours of sunshine, warmer temperatures, and ice melting. January gives you the best chance of witnessing newly hatched penguin chicks. February and March is the best time for whale watching and seeing the penguin chicks fledging as temperatures start to drop again.
The traditional route to explore Antarctica is an itinerary that departs from Ushuaia, Argentina, also known as the 'city at the end of the world'. Most expedition cruises will last 11-16 days, sailing the Drake Passage and exploring Antarctica.
But with so many options available for an Antarctic adventure, if you are after a more in-depth exploration, you can include other regions such as the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, the Ross Sea, the Weddell Sea, the Antarctic Circle and the South Pole.
Marvellous Escapes have access to over 400 suppliers, including an extensive range of cruise operators and polar specialist operators so that we can select from the best of ships, cruises and tours.
