For shopping in Muscat, you can visit one of the lavish malls or for a more traditional shopping experience, head to the Muttrah Souk, one of the oldest marketplaces in the world. You'll find plenty of shops selling frankincense, oud and other perfumes, and lots of gold and jewellery shops.

Take a long stroll down the Corniche, a great place to stop and watch the world go by while sipping an Omani coffee. Keep an eye out for the dolphin statues and stunning views across the marina. Then head to one of Muscat's public beaches for some more relaxation.

CANYONS, FJORDS & DOLPHINS

Head out through the impressive Hajar mountains and, within two hours, arrive at Nizwa (the former capital city of Oman). Visit the enormous 17th-century fort, fine souks and the famous goat market.

From Nizwa, continue your journey to Jebel Shams and Wadi Ghul and explore these areas of stunning natural beauty. As the highest mountain in Oman, standing 3,000 metres high, Jebel Shams offers magnificent views down onto the great Wadi Gual, also known as the 'Grand Canyon of Arabia, which is truly spectacular.

Dive into Ras Al Jinz with its unspoiled shorelines, golden deserts, luxuriant green oases and rugged mountains. Home to the Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve, which welcomes up to 20,000 turtles from around the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea each year. You can discover four different species of turtles with an excellent range of turtle viewing and tours.

For those seeking more adventure, a trip to Musandam is perfect. The east coast of the United Arab Emirates is separated from the rest of Oman, better known as the 'Norway of Arabia', thanks to the clear-watered fjord-like inlets.
