Kyoto is one of Japan's best-preserved cities, packed with stunning zen gardens, palaces, ancient Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines set in the pretty streets and surrounding hills. Kyoto is also one of the most popular destinations in Japan to see the cherry blossoms that are across the entire city. This remarkable city is also home to the largest number of geisha, head over to the Gion district to learn more about this fascinating aspect of Japanese culture.

Japan's third-largest city quickly became known as the fun-loving younger sibling due to the city's quirky personality. Sapporo is best known for its proximity to Sapporo Snow Festival, where you can see snow statues and ice sculptures on an epic scale. As a cosmopolitan city, you'll find a big food scene, great for cafes and Ramen and plenty of shops and bars. Taking the cable car up to Mount Hakodate, which, if done at dusk, is a great way to see the town lit up in the distance. Packed with gardens and parks, this beautiful city is a great place to get out and explore.
On the mainline between Tokyo and Kyoto, Hakone is easy to fit into your trip to Japan. Soaring above Hakone National Park is the snowy peak of Mount Fuji. This beautiful site can be explored by the various trails or simply admired from the lakeside. Hakone is spread across the shores of Lake Ashi; you'll find various ways to explore the area, but one of the most popular is a Hakone Free Pass, which gives you access to the local buses and admission to selected attractions. Also famous for hot springs, enjoy the traditional Onsen bathing (no swimsuits!).
