Vienna rail tours are bursting with elegance, rich culture and a musical history like no other. From iconic palaces like Schonbrunn, Hofburg and Belvedere, to beautiful cathedrals like St Stephen’s, Vienna truly feels like stepping into a fairytale. Whether you’re visiting for a short city break or as part of a wider European rail adventure, Vienna offers an unforgettable blend of imperial history, world-class culture and charming cafés, making it one of the continent’s most rewarding destinations to explore by train.
Vienna rail holidays are preferred by many people because of their flexibility and effortless connections. From the beginning of your trip, you’ll travel seamlessly aboard Europe’s premium rail networks, including high-speed and sleeper train services linking Vienna with Prague, Berlin, Budapest and other Central European capitals. You have complete freedom to explore as few or as many destinations as you choose.
Travelling to Vienna by train also means arriving directly into the heart of the city, allowing you to spend more time sightseeing while enjoying comfortable journeys through some of Central Europe’s most scenic landscapes.
Arriving in the city, you’ll immediately be immersed in the Austrian capital. With most landmarks in close proximity to the station, you’re able to kick off your sightseeing instantly, walking to the likes of Hofburg Palace and the Imperial Apartments or admiring the gothic architecture of St Stephen’s Cathedral. This is also a great spot for achieving panoramic views across the capital.
Vienna is famous for its classical music and artistic excellence. Being home to some of the most notorious musicians in the world, like Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss and Schubert, Vienna is the place to be if you’re interested in live performances at the State Opera.
Art lovers have plenty to explore here, with the Belvedere Palace housing one of the finest art collections, including Gustav Klimt’s iconic masterpiece, ‘The Kiss’. Alternatively, head to the Museums Quartier, offering a fantastic range of contemporary galleries and museums. Performances and art events run throughout the year and our travel experts are happy to recommend day trips we think you’d enjoy.
One of the many benefits of exploring Vienna by train is the freedom to venture further than the main city. Beyond the grand palaces, Vienna’s neighbourhoods each offer their own unique character. The Innere Stadt is home to many of the city’s most famous landmarks, elegant shopping streets and historic cafés, while Neubau is known for its independent boutiques, creative atmosphere and stylish restaurants.
For a more relaxed pace, head to Grinzing on the outskirts of the city, where traditional Heurigen taverns serve locally produced wines amongst rolling vineyards. Leopoldstadt, meanwhile, is perfect for leisurely walks through the Prater park and along the Danube Canal. If you’re looking for somewhere quieter, districts such as Wieden offer charming side streets, local cafés and independent shops, allowing you to experience a more authentic side of the Austrian capital.
Why not spend an afternoon in one of the many historic coffee houses, where you’ll enjoy sweet treats like Sachertorte or Apfelstudel, alongside a fresh cup of Viennese coffee? Vienna offers a wide range of styled eateries, like cosy taverns, our favourites for winter breaks, to Michelin-starred restaurants. We’ve been planning tours to Vienna for years and know all the best spots to try.
Exploring Vienna is easy, with the city’s excellent U-Bahn, tram and bus network connecting attractions and neighboring villages and vineyards. Although most landmarks are in walking distance, taking public transport means you’ll discover hidden gems further out.
