Exploring Prague by train is simply an unforgettable experience and a real highlight of any Central Europe rail holiday. From ancient castles and cobbled old town squares, to tranquil riversides and boutique cafes, you’ll feel completely immersed in Czech culture from the second you alight from your carriage.

There is no better way to reach Prague than onboard the Venice-Simplon Orient Express, where exceptional service and class is priority. This world-class train, operating across major cities like Budapest, Prague, Paris and Venice amongst others, provides travellers with more than just a way of getting from A to B- it becomes an experience in itself. There’s a reason it’s one of our favourite luxury rail holidays.

With the train arriving at Prague Smíchov station, located on the west side of the Vltava River, you’ll be in close proximity to many popular landmarks that keep guests returning time and time again. Following the cobbled pathways through the city, we recommend visiting Strahov Monastery, a 12th century abbey famous for its stunningly intricate library space.

Also calling this side of the river home is the Wallenstein Garden, located next to the Senate buildings. It’s recommended to visit these gardens during the summer months, when the space becomes a performance venue for concerts and theatrical groups. There are plenty of notable outdoor landmarks worth visiting in Prague, including Petrin Hill, which offers hikers panoramic sweeping views of the entire city. From our experience, we suggest taking the funicular to the top, but there are multiple routes you can choose from.

Our favourite part of a Prague rail holiday is the stunning views of the city’s attractions from your carriage window. As the route winds through the centre of the city, you’ll catch a glimpse of Prague castle– our next notable landmark along the riverbank. The castle, awarded a Guinness World record for the largest ancient complex in the world stretching across 70,000 m², is also a UNESCO heritage site making it rich in not only physical artifacts, but also incredible history and culture.

Whilst enjoying a Prague rail holiday, you’ll be given a 48 hour hop-on-hop-off bus tour pass, allowing you to explore Prague at your own pace. Using this pass, you can venture between landmarks across both sides of the river, with complete freedom and ease.

On your way to the east side of Prague, you’ll cross Charles Bridge, an iconic architectural landmark constructed in the 15th Century, connecting Prague castle to the Old Town. The bridge is often described as an open-air gallery, with 30 Baroque style statues and figures lining the sides.

Like the west side of the city, this area of Prague is home to many impressive tourist attractions, all centred around the Old Town Square. This space has a buzz all year round, but particularly during the winter, when colourful Christmas markets bring a sense of cosiness to the streets.

Here, you’ll also find the National Museum and the Municipal House, both iconic locations for art, culture and music. Inside the Municipal House, guests can admire intricate mosaic ceilings and allegorical craftsmanship, while the National Museum offers exhibits covering natural history, archaeology, ethnography, numismatics, and fine arts.

In the evenings, Prague’s gastronomic scene is bursting with hearty local dishes, such as goulash, roast duck, svíčková and dumplings. Meanwhile, if you’re after a dining experience to remember, we recommend  booking into Mozart Dinner, combining the finest of dishes and performances from Mozart’s operas right in front of you.
