If you’re a fan of Race Across the World, you’ll know that the latest series sees teams compete to make it from the Pacific side of Canada to the Atlantic. The incredible landscapes, amazing wildlife, friendly people, and fascinating history is at the forefront of the show and has inspired many travellers to add the world’s second largest country, to their Travel Wishlist.
Some of the most picturesque destinations the teams have travelled through so far have been in the Canadian Rockies. Stretching across British Columbia and Alberta, the Rockies offer travellers plenty of adventure and unforgettable scenery. Home to many striking landscapes, including lakes, mountains, and glaciers, with unique offerings throughout the seasons. This is a land of pure beauty and adventure, and here are some of the things you simply cannot miss when visiting…
BANFF & JASPER NATIONAL PARKS
Located around about 60km from Calgary, the closest airport, or around a 7-hour drive from Vancouver, Banff & Jasper are two of the most popular national parks to visit in the Canadian Rockies region. Spend at least 2 days in each to be able to experience a lot of what both parks have to offer, although up to 4 during a two-week trip to Canada would be ample.
Banff is known for its stunning alpine lakes, hiking trails on the peaks of the Rockies and accessible glaciers. It’s the oldest national park in Canada and boasts amazing wildlife including bears, moose, and mountain goats. No visit to Banff would be complete without a visit to the famous turquoise Lake Louise. Be sure to allow time to wonder around Banff town itself with its incredible mountain backdrop.
Jasper is the largest of the Canadian Rockies national parks and it is a complete outdoor haven, bursting at the seems with hot springs, glaciers, and snow-capped peaks. It also has plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities, and if you’re road tripping through the Icefields Parkway you’ll be sure to spot bears as they’re generally quite populous here, all year round.
TAKAKKAW FALLS
Another of the Canadian Rockies national parks is Yoho, a lesser-known gem which boasts the second-tallest waterfall in Canada, Takakkaw falls. The perfect place to cool off if you’re visiting in the summer months, but equally spectacular to visit at any time of year.
CALGARY
Likely to be either the first, or last stop on your Canadian Rockies adventure, Calgary is beautiful year-round and offers culture enthusiasts lots to see and do. It’s worth visiting the Calgary tower, as you should be able to spot the Rockies from this viewing tower on a clear day. Standing at over 600ft tall, it’s perhaps not as striking as Toronto’s CN tower, but it’s still worth traversing for the picturesque views from up high. Calgary is also home to plenty of museums, and famous events such as the Calgary Stampede which happens every July.
