Think of the Caribbean and you may conjure up images of idyllic palm-fringed beaches, turquoise seas, exotic gastronomy, and welcoming locals, and you’d be right! But there’s so much more to this array of islands than you may originally think. With a wealth of experiences on offer, each as unique as the islands themselves, you’ll find plenty to see and do alongside the rest & relaxation that this incredibly beautiful region of the world is home to.

Here are our top 5 experiences in the Caribbean...

SWIM WITH PIGS IN THE BAHAMAS

An Instagrammers dream! If you’re a social media regular, you’ll have seen this unique experience on many a travellers feed. Most people would, quite rightly, assume the vast coastline of the Caribbean would be home to a diverse range of marine life, and not expect to see pigs paddling in the sapphire-blue waters on their Caribbean holiday. But that’s exactly what you get in Great Exuma, in the Bahamas. In fact, its quite the phenomena now, and the area has even been nicknamed ‘Pig Island’. Of course, the islands of the Caribbean are surrounded by water, so if pigs are not your first choice of swimming companion, there are plenty of other options.

CLIMB THE PITONS IN ST. LUCIA

If you’re the type of traveller who enjoys an active adventure or two on your holiday, then a visit to lush St. Lucia should be on your list! The St. Lucian Pitons are arguably one of the most iconic sites in the Caribbean, but what about the view from the top? Experience incredible panoramic views of the island (and St. Vincent in the distance) as the reward for a five-hour hike (or less depending on your fitness levels) to the top of Gros Piton. On the way immerse yourself in incredible rainforest flora and fauna that surround the hillsides of this tropical mountain.

ENJOY AN IDYLLIC RIVER CRUISE IN JAMAICA

This isn’t your typical river cruise; this is a river cruise Jamaica style. Laid-back and cool. Martha Brae river is located in the northern part of Jamaica, close to Falmouth, and on an 3-mile or so stretch you can embark a bamboo raft for an idyllic, 1 hour serene tour of the Martha Brae river. Before taking your bamboo raft cruise, enjoy a stroll through Miss Martha’s Herb Garden, and learn about Jamaica’s healing and medicinal herbs.

SWIM WITH STINGRAYS IN THE CAYMAN ISLANDS

This experience is not as scary as it seems! These gentle giants are very used to being fed by visiting tourists and are extremely friendly and are without their stinging barbs! Step foot in shallow sandbars filled with crystal waters in North Sound, Grand Cayman and feed these amazing sea creatures as they swim around you. This is one of the top experiences in the Caribbean, for all travellers, but if you want to take it to the next level, there is the opportunity to dive with them and sit on the sandy ocean floor!

SIP RUM IN BARBADOS

One of the Caribbeans most-famous exports and arguably its best, is of course rum. Different types of rum can be found on different islands, but Barbados is the birthplace of this much celebrated spirit. There are plenty of rum tours, landmarks, and distilleries, but for a taste of local history, it must be the Mount Gay Distilleries. The Barbadians were the first in the Caribbean to distill rum, and it was right here in 1703 that it happened. Explore the history and heritage of this expertly crafted rum on a distillery tour, which wouldn’t be complete without tastings at the end.
