Marvellous Escapes Travel Designer, Laurie Bizouard,  recently had the opportunity to experience one of the most iconic rail journeys in the world the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. Having organised this trip for countless clients, Laurie was eager to see firsthand what makes this legendary train journey so special. From the moment she stepped aboard, it was clear that this was no ordinary trip. Here’s what Laurie had to say about her unforgettable experience.

WHAT WAS YOUR VERY FIRST IMPRESSION WHEN YOU STEPPED ABOARD THE VENICE SIMPLON ORIENT EXPRESS?

The moment I stepped on board, I was completely speechless. I had seen the photos, read every detail and organised this journey for so many clients over the years, but nothing truly prepares you for that first moment. The beauty, the warmth, the smell of polished wood and history, it simply takes your breath away.

YOU HAVE BEEN ORGANISING THIS TRIP FOR CLIENTS FOR YEARS. DID LIVING IT IN PERSON CHANGE ANYTHING FOR YOU?

Completely and utterly. I always believed in this experience with my whole heart, but living it with my own eyes was something else entirely. It gave me a feeling I can only describe as being somewhere between dream and reality, between now and the past. I will never speak about this train the same way again and I did not think that was even possible.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE MOMENT OR HIGHLIGHT OF THE JOURNEY?

The evening. As the light faded outside the windows and the dining car came to life with music, champagne and laughter from fellow passengers, I genuinely had to pinch myself. It was pure magic.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE ATMOSPHERE ONBOARD?

Timeless, glamorous and yet completely warm and welcoming. Everyone on board, passengers and staff alike, seems to share this unspoken feeling of knowing they are part of something very special.

HOW WAS THE DINING EXPERIENCE AND WHAT STOOD OUT ON THE MENU?

The food was absolutely gorgeous. Every course was beautifully presented and full of flavour. The champagne flows freely and the whole dining experience feels like a celebration from start to finish.

HOW WOULD YOU RATE THE SERVICE AND THE STAFF?

Simply extraordinary. The staff have genuine character, warmth and charm. Every single one of them. Nothing is too much trouble and yet it never feels overly formal. You feel completely at ease and deeply looked after at the same time.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE SLEEPING IN THE HISTORIC CARRIAGES?

Truly unlike anything else. As the train gently moves through the night and you lie in your cabin surrounded by all that beautiful woodwork and history, it really does transport you back in time. It is deeply peaceful and incredibly romantic.

IS THERE ANYTHING THAT SURPRISED YOU THAT YOUR CLIENTS HAD NEVER MENTIONED?

The sense of connection with other passengers. There is something about this train that brings people together in the most natural and lovely way. By the end of the journey, strangers feel like old friends.

WHAT WOULD YOUR TOP TIP BE FOR ANYONE ABOUT TO BOARD FOR THE FIRST TIME?

Dress up, be present and put your phone down as much as you can. Soak in every single moment because it goes far too quickly. Make sure you do not eat too much before boarding as you will absolutely want to enjoy every single bite of the food onboard. And do not skip the bar car in the evening, it is where the real magic happens. Perhaps watch Murder on the Orient Express cosied up with a cup of tea the night before like we did, nothing like David Suchet before boarding the legendary train to put you in the ambiance. I can reassure you though, I did not witness any murders!

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS EXPERIENCE AND TO WHOM DO YOU THINK IT IS BEST SUITED?

Without any hesitation whatsoever. It is perfect for couples celebrating a special anniversary or a milestone birthday, and for those who have travelled widely and are looking for something completely different, something that is more than just a holiday. This is an experience that will live in the very best memories of their lives, a journey that transcends travel and becomes something truly unforgettable.
