Travel Designer Hayley recalls her recent experience exploring the beauty of Switzerland aboard the Glacier Express & Bernina Express in the first installment of our Marvellous Memories series…

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE MOMENT/HIGHLIGHT OF THE TRIP?

The real highlight for me was my journey on the The Glacier Express. Stunning views, and an excellent 3-course lunch - it felt like a very special experience.

WHICH DESTINATION(S) SURPRISED YOU THE MOST AND WHY?

Brig, at the foot of the Simplon Pass. I had not considered it much before visiting and was pleasantly surprised when I arrived. It has a beautiful square and brilliant shopping. 

FAVOURITE ACTIVITY OR EXCURSION?

The Matterhorn Paradise, the ice sculptures and scenery throughout were spectacular. 

FAVOURITE FOOD FROM THE TRIP?

I had traditional Cheese Fondue at Whymper Stube in Zermatt. It was absolutely delicious and came with breads and potatoes for dipping – highly recommended! 

BEST/STAND-OUT SERVICE YOU RECEIVED DURING THE TRIP...

The Bernina Express staff were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble, they even bought a little surprise gift at the end which was a really nice touch.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS TRIP TO YOUR CLIENTS/FRIENDS/FAMILY?

I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone. The flow of incredible changing locations & scenery is breathtaking.

HOW WOULD YOU SUMMARISE YOUR TRIP IN ONE SENTENCE?

Spectacularly special journey through Switzerland.

WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE TRAVELLING BY RAIL?

I found every train to be clean & comfortable, and the endless beautiful views really captivate you, I had a few longer journeys on the trip and felt like time disappeared so fast because you are constantly in awe staring out the window.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE ACCOMMODATION AND WHY?

Hotel Stern in Chur. The staff were so friendly. It had a lovely atmosphere and dinner in the restaurant was delicious. The rooms are gorgeous with high beams and a very comfortable bed.
