Topic A Guide To The Best Beaches In Thailand
Read Time 5 Minutes
Author Laura Radford, Travel Writer

When it comes to beaches, Thailand has some of the best, not just in Asia, but in the world. With such a huge number of islands across the south of the country, it can be difficult to know which beaches you should visit, so we’ve broken it down into some of the best found throughout Thailand to suit different types of beachgoers…

RAILAY BEACH, KRABI

If you’re a laid-back beachgoer, this ones for you. Railay Beach is not located on the island of Krabi, but is on a small peninsula off it, and can be reached by boat from the centre of Krabi. The beach here is surrounded by incredible sea cliffs which make it fabulously picturesque. You’ll be surrounded by emerald-green waters, which makes this beach different compared to others around the country. The fact it is only accessible by boat gives it an even more secluded vibe and is great for soaking up the peace and serenity.

MAYA BAY, PHI PHI LEH

This beach was made famous by the film ‘The Beach’ starring Leonardo di Caprio and has drawn tourists in vast numbers ever since its release. The waters here are a stark contrast to those around Railay Beach, and are much more turquoise, surrounded by pure white sands. Its pretty sheltered as is a bay encased with 100m high cliffs, and there are several beaches to enjoy. If you’re the type of traveller who likes to tick things off a list, and say ‘I’ve been there’, then this ones for you. Visitor numbers here have strict regulations now, to help preserve the beach and as such new coral has flourished in the surrounding waters.

PATONG BEACH, PHUKET

Phuket is Thailand’s largest island, and as a result, very popular! But it also means it boasts quite a few beaches. Patong is probably one of the country’s most popular. And is great if you like a livelier beach experience. There’s a booming nightlife here too, and you’ll find a lot of the moon parties happen in and around beaches in Phuket, with lots of live music and deals on buckets of beers and other alcoholic drinks.

SAIREE BEACH, KOH TAO

If lazing about on the sand isn’t your idea of fun, but you still like a beach visit in your trip, then Sairee Beach may be a good choice for you. It’s a great spot if you enjoy a bit of snorkelling and diving, as there is a coral reef just offshore. You’ll find plenty of local dive centres and beautiful white sand to sink your feet into.

LAMAI BEACH, KOH SAMUI

This beach is our pick for the honeymooner, or romantic couples’ getaway, however, Koh Samui is one of the most well-known of destinations in Thailand and welcomes all types of travellers. It has shaken off a little of its crazy party reputation and now has a tad more refined luxury. Lamai Beach is quieter than some of the other beaches in Koh Samui and attracts a slightly more laid-back crowd, with plenty of higher-end accommodation close by, and lots of restaurants offering everything from authentic Thai cuisine to international fusion fare.
