Barbados sits in the eastern Caribbean at the crossroads between the Caribbean Sea and the vast Atlantic Ocean. Its one of the larger Caribbean islands, with a rich culture, beautiful beaches, and plenty to see and do. But what should a first timer focus on when visiting Barbados?
A RUM TOUR
Barbados is the birthplace of this famous Caribbean tipple, and whilst there are several rum distilleries that can be visited across the island, it certainly makes sense for a first timer to visit the most famous. Arguably producing the world’s oldest rum, the Mount Gay Distillery offers a tour where you can learn more about the process and history behind it, and of course taste the different types. There’s also the option for lunch with traditional Bajan fare.
BRIDGETOWN
Whether flying into Barbados, or making a stop on a Caribbean cruise, Bridgetown will be your first entry into the island. This historical capital boasts an abundance of colonial history from its sugar trading past, as well as a hub for the slave trade. There’s also great shopping to be found here, with plenty of duty-free wares, or head to an authentic market for some true Caribbean spices right from the source.
ST. NICHOLAS ABBEY
This Jacobean-style mansion is one of the oldest plantation houses in the Caribbean. Lovingly restored, it gives you an insight into the island’s troubled history. You can embark on a tour of the house, including the rum distillery which is attached and has been producing bottles here for centuries. Wander around to marvel at the stunning architecture of the Great House, built in 1658, with beautiful Tudor-style elements alongside Jacobean-Caribbean influences.
BATHSHEBA BEACH
Less of a sunbathing and swim kind of beach, Bathsheba is one for the camera roll! This incredibly picturesque beach boasts stunning rock formations, verdant cliffs and rolling Atlantic waves, making it a popular choice for photographers and surfers a like. Worth a visit for a stroll, and to take some snaps if surfing isn’t your thing.
ANDROMEDA BOTANIC GARDENS
Located in Bathsheba, the Andromeda Botanic Gardens are incredibly rare and unique and include an array of interconnected gardens, with more than 500 species of plant and over 100 tree species. The stunning biodiversity of these gardens means you’ll also be able to spot butterflies and even hummingbirds as you wander around. Well worth a visit!
This is just a snapshot of what’s on offer in Barbados.
